Youth of the Month/Year This popular program recognizes outstanding high school students who attain high levels of scholastic achievement, community involvement, and leadership skills. Six students are selected as outstanding Youth of the Month in separate presentations during the school year, from which one is chosen in late Spring as Student of the Year. That student is then submitted for consideration as our District Youth of the Year, with the possibility of being ultimately being selected as National Youth of the Year.
EXCEL Club EXCEL Clubs are organized groups of students dedicated to improving their schools, communities, and country through community service volunteerism. As EXCEL members, they serve their communities and develop valuable leadership and organizational skills. With the help of a school advisor, the EXCEL members lead the club, decide how to serve their school and community, and then get actively involved in accomplishing their goals.
Partners in Education On April 19, 1990, The Exchange Club of Columbus entered into a collaborative partnership with Marshall Middle School, with the objective of assisting the school faculty and students through a variety of activities. As Partner’s in Education, we have had the opportunity and privilege of expressing our appreciation to the school’s staff and students through activities such as 1) Serving teachers breakfast at the beginning and ending of each school year, 2) providing materials for school projects such as a parade float for the annual Christmas parade, 3) assisting with school beautification projects, 4) providing student who have outstanding grades with ‘incentive parties’ (read: pizza!!!) for each grading period during the year, 5) student mentoring, and 6) door prizes for PTA meetings throughout the year.
Sunshine Special for Youth This program provides funds and support for youths in need. For example, funding is provided each year to the Valley Rescue Mission to sponsor ten under-privileged children to attend the Mission’s special one-week Camp JOY retreat, a controlled rural environment where negative influences are removed and positive influences are substituted. Funding is also provided for other activities throughout the community that support our youth-- such as the the Ronald McDonald House, for instance.
Accepting the Challenge for Excellence (ACE) At any time, extraordinary events or circumstances can challenge any of us to adapt in a positive manner. When you’re a high school student, such challenges can be especially difficult and demanding.
Each year, this program identifies such students and honors them in a special luncheon presentation. These are students who, having had adversity thrust upon them, found in their hearts a way to overcome the challenges, stay in school, and prepare for graduation. The top ACE Award student is submitted to our Georgia District for recognition, opening the door to possible national recognition as the National ACE Award student.
Young Citizenship From each middle school in our school district, an 8th grade student is recognized and honored, based on he/she demonstrating qualities of caring, helpfullness, self-motivation, and leadership ability. Emphasis is on respect, a sense of responsibility and accountability, and resourcefulness. Each student recognized receives a certificate and an Exchange Club thesaurus during a regular club luncheon attended by the students and school representatives.
